HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

 Good afternoon from Puerto Aventuras!

I wish to extend to you a very Merry Christmas and when the New Year arrives that the year 2007 treats you with happiness and continued success.

Every single day of 2006 for me has been a wonderful day!  I successfully completed all my Maritime courses in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida as of July 7th.
That was a three year project involving 18 courses required by the USCG.
I successfully taught over 35 students with cave, cavern and Submerge DPV courses.  I had a tremendous amount of fun guiding various cave divers presenting new and exciting places for them to enjoy.  I successfully found and explored three new cave systems.  I was able to find and dive at least twenty other cave systems that I had not seen before.  My Nikon digital camera system with the Light & Motion Titan housing has been a pure joy to use with successful results and I have not scratch the surface of its potential, particularly learning to use the Adobe Photo Shop software program.

I converted half of my deck area to my Condo into a second bedroom and I am in the middle of remodeling my master bathroom and other improvements.  My new Ford truck has been outstanding in performance and the entertainment from my satellite Sirius radio has brought me a great amount of listening satisfaction.

Soon I will launching my new formatted web site –

                     www.cenotesoftheRivieraMaya.com

It basically will be my cenotes book with a tremendous amount of updated and new information with a new look all for FREE access to the public. My neighbor, Lenny Krauss is my web master.  I vision it to be the #1 source of detail data about the cenotes, snorkeling sites, cenote dives and the 130+ cave systems located in the Riviera Maya.  I have been vigorously researching the past six months. The beauty of this web site is that I can keep it updated with accurate information for cave divers, cenote divers and snorkelers. It will include GPS coordinates, detail maps to the cenotes and enough input to prepare anyone on what is what such as who are the land owners, dive site fees, keys for gates, and access to the water and so on. In addition, I will be selling advertisements to various businesses in the Riviera Maya of my choosing.

This past summer I decided to teach and guide full time for the remainder of 2006 and the first half 2007.  This next summer of 2007 my intentions is to get back on with Transocean of Houston or a Maritime shipping company.  I have been having a tremendous amount of fun teaching and diving full time and with more success than I expected.

I extend special holiday greetings to:

My sister Mary Stair, her husband Jim and my nephew Daniel and niece Lauren who recently moved from Burlingame, California to Austin, Texas as Jim successfully was offered and accepted an executive position the with the DELL Computer Corporation.  It appears Austin, Texas will be my new USA home away from my home in Puerto Aventuras though I will continue with my Florida mailing address.

To my brother Jeff who lives in Estero (Ft. Myers), Florida and Suzie who put me up on weekends when I was taking my Maritime courses in Ft. Lauderdale.

To Tony DeRosa of Sandy (Salt Lake City), Utah who maintains the computers (bookings) for Villas DeRosa/Aquatech and his motorcycles

I offer a special thanks to NAUI with Peter Oliver – the Editor of Sources and former cave diving student and to Tim O’Leary – NAUI´s Technical Training Chairman who upgraded my status as a NAUI Cave I and II Instructor.  Thank you.  To President Brian Carney and Larry Green with doing an outstanding job with the Technical Diving International (TDI) cave diving program.  I am very proud to be part of the PSAI (Professional Scuba Association International) team with CEO & Founder Hal Watts and President Gary Taylor (a former cave student from the mid 1980´s) as Gary and I will be writing together a new cave diving text.  To Rodney and Suzie Nairne of Submerge DPVS who are the creators and mentors of my ponies.  I love my ponies!  To Mary Miller of Durant, Oklahoma who has allowed me the use of her condo suites for many of my students and cave diving clients.  To Dan Orr as the new CEO and President of Diver’s Alert Network (DAN) and his wife Betty as Dan is another former cave diving student.  To Eric Eckes of Foothill Ranch, California who put together an outstanding Power point presentation of his March cave diving course.  I am impressed!  To Marco Rotzinger and family of the CUZEL air and gas blending station for keeping me going with a great service for my cave diving.  And of course, my loyal support to the National Association for Cave Diving and Larry and Debra Green as they continue to perform an outstanding job with the NACD Association.  I am looking forward to the publication of my cavern diving text – Cavern Diving – Safe & Fun finally.

In addition, a special Holiday greetings to all my cave diving friends of the Riviera Maya such as Pablo Diaz, Rogelio Mier, Andris ¨Sharky¨ Labarthe (my lawyer), David Orozco, Dennis Weeks(some great DPV dives), Kate Lewis, Harry Gust, Sergio Grannuci, his wife Karin and new child Fabio,  Pep llinares, Alex Alverez (we had fun this summer exploring), Dr. Harry Hicks, Nancy DeRosa, Dan Hartman, Fernando Nelson, Robbie Schmittner, Connie Lore (always fun at Leo’s Pizza in Chemuyil), Lena Ericson, Jeronimo Avilles and German Yanez Mendoza (a great cave diving trip to Cozumel in August).

I hope that 2006 was a successful year for you too!  Be safe and maintain.

Merry Christmas!

KOICHI NISHZMURA & TAKESHIGA TOSHIYA of JAPAN

On Saturday, December 9th I started a FULL CAVE Course with Koichi Nishzmura of Yokahama, Japan and Takeshige Toshiya of Tokyo.  That is correct, my first cave diving students from Japan.  We performed two cave dives upstream into Sistema X´tabay at Cenote Chikin Ha and a downstream dive in Sistema PonDeRosa traversing to Cenote Zacil and back.  Both men were excellent with their buoyancy and trim as they had completed their first half of cave diving training with NACD Instructor Rogelio Mier of Cancun.  Their equipment configuration was superb using mostly Halcyon and OMS equipment.

On Sunday, December 10th, we dived Sistema Taj Mahal traversing to Cenote Buena Vista working with a jump and one permanent ¨T¨ intersection plus performing a gas share/touch-contact drill.  Our second dive was downstream towards the ¨Room of Cheers¨ Room practicing a mask off exit 300 feet/90 meters.  That afternoon we dived at the Sistema Chac Mool to the Monster Room with another share gas/touch-contact and our first ¨lost line¨ drills.

On Monday, December 11th we dived Cenote Mayan Blue swimming the ¨Death Arrow¨ passage working with two jumps and exit the cave on back-up lights and a one-fin swim.  That afternoon we dived at Cenote Carwash to the ¨Room of Tears¨ and beyond.  We worked with one jump, three permanent ¨T¨ intersections, one share gas/touch-contact through a minor restriction, our third ¨lost line¨ drill and negotiating seven minor restrictions.

On Tuesday, December 12th we dived the Grand Cenote swimming beyond the Trap Door almost making it to the Cenote Pibilanny.  We negotiated five jumps and two permanent ¨T¨ intersections with a total bottom time of 145 minutes for the dive.  My guys were stoked and impressed with the dives as their performance proved they were on top of the game proving their skills as masters of the BCD and trim and comprehending to the complete degree the necessary psychological skills and being comfortable and confident to perform the dives.  Outstanding!

My special thanks to my friend Rogelio Mier and his beautiful girlfriend
YORIKO for allowing me this great opportunity to teach this course.

Hola

Good evening from Puerto Aventuras, Q, Roo, Mexico!

This past week I was teaching a FULL CAVE course for ALEX BOULTON of Sydney, Australia! He had already completed the first half of his cave diving training in Australia with the CDAA (Cave Diving Association of Australia) We started on Sunday, December 3rd with two cave dives at CENOTE CHIKIN HA (Water from the West) diving upstream SISTEMA X´TABAY. On Monday, December 4th we dived at SISTEMA TAJ MAHAL diving the beautiful Chinese Garden and downstream towards the Room of Cheers. Alex practiced one ¨touch-contact/share air¨ drill through a minor restriction and swam 300 feet without a mask on following the guideline. There were seven different cavern tour groups that day.

That afternoon we dived at SISTEMA CHAC MOOL swimming to the CUAC NA (Monster room) Room to witness the outstanding 42 foot dripstone formation. We swam to this location in 32 minutes staying for 10 minutes. On the return swim Alex practiced his first ¨lost line¨ drill.

Tuesday, December 5th we dived SISTEMA TORTUGA and SISTEMA CARWASH enjoying the incredible Room of Tears Room and beyond to the 3rd ¨T¨ intersection. With these two locations Alex practiced two more ¨share air/touch contact ¨drills through minor restrictions and his second ¨lost line¨ drill.

Wednesday, December 6th, we finished most of my lectures in the morning and in the afternoon we dived SISTEMA XAXAAN HA located behind the village of Chemuyil. Alex practiced another ¨touch contact/share air¨ drill and his third ¨lost line¨ drill.

Thursday, December 7th we dived at the GRAND CENOTE to CENOTE BOSH CHEN and back and CENOTE NOHOCH NAH CHICH. Alex is definitely a PH.D. of the wings BCD and a proud owner of a beautiful dry suit manufactured by SEATEC of Australia. His command of buoyancy, hovering and trim are text book perfect. An outstanding diver! In total, Alex negotiated 14 jumps & gaps and 9 permanent ¨T¨ intersections. That late afternoon we dived CENOTE NOHOCH NAH CHICH.

Friday, December 8th we returned to CENOTE NOHOCH NAH CHICH for two more dives in this outstanding cave area as Alex was able to see the incredible formations on Parker´s line, Charlie´s line, Joanie´s line, Ron´s line, Alberto´s line and the fantastic ¨Rock N´ Roll¨siphon passage. In addition, the amazing Heaven´s Gate and Disney Land were part of his enjoyable dives. Friday evening, we had Lena Ericson and Connie Lore as our guests at the famous LEO´S PIZZA in Chemuyil. Alex will continue cave diving for four more days diving with Kate Lewis.

Maintain and be safe!

DIVING WITH PAUL HEINERTH

Filed under: Cave Diving — Steve @ 8:15 am

DIVING WITH PAUL HEINERTH
I first met Paul Heinerth during January, 1973 while I was a student at St. Petersburg Junior College.  I was taking the college scuba course taught by Don Grundman that was being assisted by Paul Heinerth and Karan Pribble (Sheck Exley´s first wife).  That was the beginning of a solid 34 year friendship.  We attended each others first wedding, were partners at Scuba West, shared many dive trips (Belize & Little Cayman) and performed some fabulous cave diving such as TWIN D´s cave system at Weeki Wachee Springs.  Paul was the first explorer of this cave and he named in memory of Dean Valentine and Dutch Vanhoord who died in Tarpon Springs Sink during May, 1973 (Dutch & Dean).  It is a superb cave dive!

During the week of November 18th, Paul brought a group of ten cave divers to the Riviera Maya staying at VILLAS DEROSA/AQUATECH.  Paul arranged his schedule to stay an extra week so that we could do some cave diving together.  He was my guest at my home in Puerto Aventuras.
We began diving on Tuesday, November 28th and dived SISTEMA TUHS XUBAXA AKTUN using one stage bottle with our doubles.  We had a great dive as Paul was impressed with this outstanding cave system and the Mastodon bones.  We had over 180 minutes of bottom time.

On Wednesday, November 29th, Paul Heinerth and I motored to the fabulous BLUE ABYSS in SISTEMA NOHOCH NAH CHICH.  We used two SUBMERGE AV – 26 DPVS apiece, double 80 cubic feet tanks with two stage bottle each.  This was Paul´s first visit to the BLUE ABYSS.  He loved it and was really impressed with this spectacular drop off.  We arrived at the CENOTE DINNER HOLE in 37 minutes, X line in thirteen minutes, the Pablo Diaz line another seven minutes and to the BLUE ABYSS line at the 32nd minute from Cenote Dinner Hole.  We entered the BLUE ABYSS room at the 78 minute.   We spent close to 25 minutes in the Blue Abyss, long enough where I had 32 minutes of decompression.  Total dive was over 200 minutes.  Paul thoroughly enjoyed the dive.
That Wednesday night we had dinner at THE PUB in Puerto Aventuras with Dennis Weeks of Paalmu as our guest.    Sitting at the next table was Kate Lewis, Paul Beale, Vicki McNair and friends.  I had accidentally bumped my face with a stage bottle a few days earlier causing a slight cut over my right eye brow.  Kate and I agreed to play a prank by telling everyone that she hit me after I caught her that morning in bed with Paul.  Ahh, so much for pranks as no one bought the bullshit!

On Thursday, November 30th we were diving SISTEMA CHAN HOL using one stage bottle.  Our bottom time was 155 minutes and we calculated we reached close to 5,000 feet back as we encountered the A T AZUL directional line arrow at a T intersection.  It is a gorgeous cave!   That Thursday night we had great pizza at PIZZA LEO´s with Connie Lore as our guest as she arrived Wednesday from Florida.  She has two weeks of groups for cave diving staying at VILLAS DEROSA – AQUATECH.  She is booked solid with eight group trips for 2007.   We discussed some of the asinine internet chatter posted on The Deco Stop where this idiot Al Wells from West Chester, Pennsylvania started a thread on how a non-directional marker was used at a jump intersection in the Sac Aktun cave system.  I am amazed how so many people must be bored with their lives to spend so much time on the internet posting and thinking they are cave diving experts when they have no ¨mojo¨ (cave diving experience) to back up their talk.  I also found it interesting to learn that JOEY P. is really Joe Cetelli of South Florida.  There is nothing worse than cowards hiding behind false names.¼br />       Paul departed on Friday, December 1st to visit a friend in Cancun and I was diving with LENA ERICSON and two of her cave divers staying at Villas DeRosa – Aquatech.  We dived CENOTE NOHOCH NAH CHICH as I gave them the Grand tour of this fabulous cave system.

During our three great days of diving, Paul and I were trying to figure out the last time we dived together.  I was in shock as we figured it was in 1987.  Man, time really flies fast!
 Maintain and be safe!

MICHAEL KOLTZ & MICAEL MALMBERG

Filed under: Cave Diving — Steve @ 4:06 pm

SUBMERGE DPV COURSE
WITH MICHAEL KOLTZ and MICAEL MALMBERG
On Friday, November 24th was the graduation day for Michael Koltz of Jacksonville, Florida and Micael Malmberg of Sweden taking their six day SUBMERGE EXTENDED RANGE DPV course.  Our dive was at CENOTE NOHOCH NAH CHICH scootering to the beautiful BLUE ABYSS room.

The day before on Thursday, November 23rd was a 10,500 penetration into the gorgeous LSD area starting from the CENOTE DOS OJOS east entry.  Each of us used two SUBMERGE UV-26 DPVS, double 80 cubic foot cylinders with EANx 32.  We completed that dive NOT breathing our back gas.  Both cave divers were thoroughly impressed with the size and features of the canyon areas and the widths of the saltwater zones.

We began the SUBMERGE DPV course on Sunday, November 19th with an open water training session at CENOTE MANATI (Manatee) located on the Tankah Beach adjacent to the Casa Cenote.  This 300 meter spring run through a mangrove swamp is the perfect recipe to begin a SUBMERGE DPV course as it exactly resembles an underwater cave passage with no ceiling.  Both cave divers own their UV 18 SUBMERGE DPVS at home.  However, they were impressed that the transition to the longer DPV was easier than expected.  We practiced towing techniques involving a disabled DPV and a second DPV, sharing air, carrying a stage bottle and other techniques.   The only thing I regret for that day was not adding a second stage bottle to the open water practice.
After the dive session we had a great BBQ buffet lunch at the Casa Cenote Restaurant that over looks the spring outlet that empties into the beautiful Caribbean Sea.

Our afternoon dives were at CENOTE CHAC MOOL scootering upstream to CENOTE PIKAL in 24 minutes (3600 feet/1091 meters) scooter time and back in the same amount of time.  Our second dive was a 13 minute run (1600 feet) downstream to the MONSTER ROOM and 12 minutes back.  The dive session was a success with both cave divers becoming more comfortable with the machines in the cave environment.

On Monday, November 20th, we drove out 8 kilometers on the Chemuyil Road for a DPV dive at SISTEMA TUHS XUBAXA AKTUN.  I wanted to dive this power cave passage while everyone was physically fresh as the cenote required to haul our DPV machines over 412 feet/125 meters.  We used my new carrying devices – aluminum back plates with a slot using cam straps that I bought at Sam´s Club.   They worked like a charm as carrying these heavy machines on our backs much easier.  Michael and Micael were amazed with the size of the trunk passage and the bonus of observing the mastodon bone site.  We carried one stage bottle for safety using 900 psi total in our doubles.

For our afternoon session we traveled to CENOTE TAJ MAHAL for a run on the Jumna River main line to CENOTE BUENA VISTA.  On our return in the huge room section of the Jumna River gold line section, we practiced various techniques in order to gain more confidence of being in command of the DPV machines.
Our third day of the SUBMERGE DPV course was a double session with the morning dive session at SISTEMA CAMILO entering at the CENOTE MUCHACHOS entry point.  We carried one stage bottle for safety.  Both Michael and Micael were amazed with the power size of the main passage.   We ventured 1000 feet/303 meters on the Black Hills line on our return run.  The last 600 feet/182 meters out on the main passage, we practiced towing a disabled DPV situation(s).    For lunch we ate at the Tulum Beach at the Mayan Grill Restaurant content with the beautiful view of the Caribbean Sea.  Our afternoon dive was at CENOTE CHICKIN HA diving downstream into the SISTEMA PONDEROSA.   However, Michael Koltz chose not to dive as we discovered his mask, fin and Wings BCD were missing.  We later determined that they must have blown out of my truck on our drive on Highway 307 from SISTEMA CAMILO though I thought the truck was properly packed.  Therefore, Micael Malmberg or known as Mike 1 and I made a DPV dive to CENOTE EDEN and to THE CHAPEL  We practiced gas sharing techniques on our return to CENOTE CHICKIN HA.

Our remaining three days were planned one session dives as we were now using two SUBMERGE DPVS apiece and two stage bottles each.  The logistics with so much equipment makes it impossible for more than one dive site per day.
We chose CENOTE MAYAN BLUE with our planned dive to scooter B tunnel, to E tunnel to F tunnel to G tunnel and onto the A tunnel beyond the Battleship Room to the ¨T¨ intersection on your way to CENOTE NAHARON and back using only the stage bottles and no back gas.  However, as we began the dive on the B line it was very obvious both men were struggling with the addition of the second stage bottle and towing the second DPV.  We called the dive 400 feet/121 meters in and return to the open water.  After a lengthy discussion, we determined the halocline was a major part of the problem.  We decided to cut the dive in half the planned distance and not use the second stage bottle or DPV.  The dive worked like a champ!  After the DPV dive, both Michael (II) and Micael (I) practiced for an hour in the open water practicing carrying the second stage and towing the second DPV.  It paid off handsomely as our dive the next day at SISTEMA DOS OJOS to the LSD area was a huge success.
With our graduation dive at CENOTE NOHOCH NAH CHICH to the BLUE ABYSS, the DON PEDRO RODRIQUEZ UTIZEL family treated me with gracious respect and warmth.  I was overwhelmed by their help with all our equipment for the dive to be performed.  Our dive was text book perfect as we reached the Cenote Dinner Hole in 35 minutes.  We clipped off our first DPV and first stage bottle at this point. We reached the ¨X¨ line eleven minutes later, the Pablo Diaz line in seven minutes and the final jump to the BLUE ABYSS at the 32nd minute on our second DPVs.  We entered the BLUE ABYSS room at the 77th minute of total time underwater.  Both Michael and Micael were stunned by the drop off and the descent into this beautiful saltwater, blue tinted geological wonder.   Before we exited the room at the 40 foot level, Michael Koltz swam over to me and shook my hand.  That was my reward after a very hard working and successful week of using the SUBMERGE DPV machines.  Our exit back to CENOTE NOHOCH NAH CHICH was flawless with a total time underwater of 180 minutes.

After our great dives and saying our goodbyes to the DON PEDRO family, we stopped at the famous LEO´S PIZZA for our PIZZA LEO extra Grande and our satisfying refreshments.  On the way back to Puerto Aventuras we stopped by VILLAS DEROSA/AQUATECH to visit with Paul Heinerth and his group of ten cave divers.  They were sat down at the dinner table sharing their stories of a great week of cave diving.  They were diving the CENOTE NOHOCH NAH CHICH the day before as was a team of three GUE I cave divers from Norway.¼br /> On Saturday early morning I drove Gary Lemme of New Port Richey, Florida who was part of Paul Heinerth´s group and an old friend of the past and MICHAEL KOLTZ a ride to the airport as both men had early departure flights back home.  I returned to Puerto Aventuras to pick up MICAEL MALMBERG as we performed easy, fun dives at CENOTE OF THE SUN of the SISTEMA NARANJAL and CENOTE CHAN HOL.  We were planning to dive CENOTE JAILHOUSE, however, two teams of cave divers with a total of six were already there so we opted for a downstream dive at the CENOTE OF THE SUN making it deep into the WHITE RIVER line.  While diving at the CENOTE CHAN HOL, we witnessed the birth and the impact of over a billion grass hoppers crawling about.  Grass hoppers everywhere!  Micael was super impressed with the cave system!
I was very proud and satisfied with the results of the SUBMERGE DPV course and the performance of Michael Koltz and Micael Malmberg.  An excellent job despite the frustrations we had at CENOTE MAYAN BLUE and the lost equipment of MICHAEL II.  I learned much with the experience of having two DPV students as I will continue to make changes and improvements to the course structure and content.  I wish to sincerely thank ALEX ALVAREZ of Tulum and owner of the ACUATICA TULUM DIVE CENTER and DENNIS WEEKS of Paalmu and owner/operator of DIABLO DIVERS for their help with the RODNEY NAIRNE SUBMERGE DPVS.   A superb DPV machine for cave diving that now is convincing several GAVIN DPV owners that it is now time to switch.
